For something as simple as a straw, we’ve created a surprising amount of complexity.
Paper that dissolves too quickly.
Metal that needs carrying, cleaning, remembering.
Reusable options that aren’t always reused.
And then there’s something far simpler, grass.
What are grass straws made from?
Grass straws are made from naturally hollow-stem plants, most commonly varieties like Lepironia articulata (often called “rice stem grass”), found in parts of Southeast Asia such as Vietnam and Cambodia. While other hollow-stem plants exist, Lepironia articulata remains the most widely used due to how naturally suited it is for this purpose.
These plants grow with a built-in tubular structure — meaning they don’t need to be reshaped or engineered into straws.
Once harvested, the process is minimal:
No chemical coatings. No synthetic materials. No industrial reshaping. What you’re using is essentially the plant itself, just prepared for use.
Why are they considered sustainable?
Grass straws are:
100% biodegradable – they break down naturally within weeks or months
Compostable – can return to soil without leaving residue
Because they grow quickly and abundantly in wetland regions, they’re also considered a renewable resource when harvested responsibly.
Compared to plastic straws, which can take hundreds of years to degrade, grass straws offer a much shorter lifecycle with far less environmental impact.
How do they compare to other alternatives?
Each option solves one problem, but introduces another:
Grass straws don’t try to be permanent. That’s exactly their advantage.
What’s it like to use one?
They’re slightly firmer than paper, with a natural texture and mild earthy scent. Because they’re plant-based, each straw varies slightly in thickness and colour. They work best with cold and room-temperature drinks and can typically last through a full use without breaking down. Dried versions can even be rinsed and reused a few times, though they’re primarily designed to return to the earth after use.
Why this small switch matters
A single straw won’t change everything. But it represents something bigger, a shift from convenience-first thinking to consequence-aware choices.
And that’s where real change begins. Not in perfection. But in awareness.
In the end
Grass straws aren’t revolutionary. They’re not trying to be. They’re a reminder that not every solution needs to be invented, some already exist, waiting to be noticed again.
