Before matcha became a green swirl in lattes and aesthetic morning reels, it existed in something far quieter, ritual, discipline, and stillness.
Not a trend. Not a wellness aesthetic. But a practice of presence.
Matcha’s story begins in East Asia, rooted in Chinese tea traditions before being refined and preserved in Japan, where it became central to ceremonial tea culture. Over time, it evolved into something deeply symbolic in Japanese tea ceremonies, not just a drink, but a moment structured around intention, respect, and awareness.
Every movement mattered. Every pause had meaning.
From leaf to ritual: how matcha is made??
Unlike most teas, matcha is not steeped and discarded. It is consumed entirely, the leaf itself, stone-ground into an ultra-fine powder.
But the process begins long before that moment of whisking.
Tea plants used for matcha are carefully shade-grown for several weeks before harvest. This shading increases chlorophyll levels, giving matcha its signature vibrant green colour, and enhances naturally occurring compounds like L-theanine, which contributes to its calm, focused energy profile.
Once harvested, the leaves are steamed to prevent oxidation, dried, and then slowly stone-ground into powder. This traditional grinding method is intentionally slow, preserving both flavour and nutrients while maintaining a soft, velvety texture.
Nothing about it is rushed. Even the making of it reflects its philosophy.
Why matcha feels different
Matcha contains caffeine, but it behaves differently in the body compared to coffee. This is largely due to its natural combination with L-theanine, which helps smooth out stimulation and support a more sustained, steady sense of alertness rather than a sharp spike and crash.
This is why many describe it not as “energy,” but as clarity. Not louder focus, quieter focus.
Where tradition meets modern life
In traditional settings, matcha was never meant to be consumed mindlessly. It was prepared slowly, often shared in silence, and grounded in ritual.
Today, it exists in a very different world, portable, aesthetic, fast. Yet its essence hasn’t changed.
What has changed is how easily it can be detached from its original intention.
And that’s where perspective matters!!
Matcha today: more than a trend, less than a rule
Matcha doesn’t need to be elevated into a wellness identity, nor dismissed as just another trend. It sits in a middle space, one that can be used consciously or casually, depending on the person and the moment.
Wellness isn’t about hierarchy. It’s about awareness. Sometimes it’s coffee. Sometimes it’s herbal tea. Sometimes it’s matcha. Each serves a different rhythm.

The method changes. The intention doesn’t have to.
